60,000 Trees & Counting: Tree Growing Across the Group
In a world grappling with environmental challenges, the importance of sustainability cannot be overstated. With a resolute commitment to combat climate change and foster a greener future, a sustainable initiative, Journey to 60,000 trees, was set in motion In April 2023. Spearheaded by IPS and its portfolio of companies, this initiative aims to promote reforestation, ensuring a sustainable environment for generations to come.
Environmental sustainability lies at the heart of our operations, as we fervently strive to combat climate change and meet our net zero target by 2030, IPS embarked on the ambitious Journey to plant 60,000 trees, to mark 60 years. The initiative received an impressive start, with IPS donating over 1,700 tree seedlings to its staff, igniting a spirit of environmental stewardship.
Notably, our portfolio of companies wholeheartedly embraced this noble cause, leading remarkable tree growing initiatives across their premises, forests, villages, and schools.
PFL has harnessed its existing farmer base in Kwale, Tana River, and Makueni counties, providing climate-smart practice training and continuous support through dedicated field officers.
Another significant partnership emerged between Botanical Extracts and Mount Kenya Trust, as they jointly participated in a tree growing exercise at Kithoka Forest in Upper Imenti, Meru Forest Station. Japher Otieno, the Environment and Social Officer at Botanical Extracts, proudly declares, “As part of our forest restoration initiative, we planted 103 trees.” Such collaborative endeavours showcase the power of collective action in nurturing our natural habitats.
Recognizing the pivotal role of education in environmental stewardship, Allpack Ltd. embarked on a tree growing exercise at Ngwata Primary School in May 2023, planting 250 trees to enhance the school’s greenery.
Chris Adero, the Environment, Health, and Safety Officer at Allpack, underscores their long-standing commitment, stating, “Over the years, Allpack has planted hundreds of trees at the school, nurturing a sense of environmental consciousness.”
Not to be outdone, Bujagali Energy Limited (BEL) has planted over 1,700 trees, BEL staff planted 100 trees as they celebrated the World Environment Day, 800 indigenous trees planted in the dam area and 900 fruit trees planted in project area communities. Stella Barbara Nabugenyi, the People Performance Manager at BEL, shares their ambitious goals, “BEL aims to plant 3,500 trees in 2023.”
By intertwining their efforts with the local community, BEL demonstrates the significance of collective responsibility in reforestationn.
African Leather’s commitment to sustainability manifested through their planting of 1,000 tree seedlings, on their premises. Patricia Karau, the Commercialization Officer at IPS, emphasizes the importance of this initiative, stating, “As part of the African Leather sustainability initiative, we are dedicated to cultivating a greener environment.”
The tree growing exercises will continue throughout the year, resonating across the entire group. The Journey to 60,000 trees unites these IPS companies, heralding a brighter future through reforestation efforts. Together, they serve as beacons of hope, paving the way towards a sustainable and flourishing planet.
