What’s the full acronym for IPS?
IPS stands for Industrial Promotion Services.
Can you explain the primary focus of IPS?
IPS is the infrastructure and industrial development arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED), an affiliate of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). Through our group of companies, IPS invests in and manages industrial project companies to create solutions to pressing economic and infrastructural needs. Our activities are rooted in sustainability.
When and why was IPS established?
IPS was initially established in Kenya (March 1963) before independence, to promote private sector development. The prime objective of IPS was to identify and mobilise private finance in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, discover overseas partners, and promote industrial and infrastructure enterprises within each country’s framework. At the time of IPS's establishment, mobilising local and foreign private capital was challenging, thus IPS adopted a fundamental approach of taking a significant equity stake in its projects as opposed to providing loans thereby being partners in progress.
In which geographical regions is IPS present?
We are present in East Africa, West Africa and Central Asia regions.
How many companies are part of the IPS group?
IPS has 20+ project companies globally
