Love Our Planet Campaign
The 14th of February begins and ends with people from all over the world gifting loved ones with roses, chocolates, champagne, and many other romantic gifts to show love. For valentine’s day, IPS and its project companies started the #Loveourplanet campaign to show love to mother nature. A series of sustainable initiatives were carried out throughout the month, from mass clean-ups to eradicating the use of single-use plastics within companies, donation of reusable products to a children’s home to ensure a circular economy, capacity building on environmental stewardship, managing organic waste and generating insect protein and frass.
Declutter to Donate
Frigoken Ltd. (FKL) wellness champions took an initiative to reach out to their staff, to declutter at home, and get the reusable pieces they no longer use, so that they can be donated to people in need rather than disposing of. The theme they used was Declutter to Donate by giving it a second home.
By March 12th, they had collected books, clothes, shoes, and bags which were donated to Shadow Mountains Children’s Home and donated.
‘‘We were able to donate 136.9 kgs of clothes and some food donations to the home. The home also collects French Beans to supplement their feeding program from FKL. It was a great day to end the love our planet campaign and support the community in Baba Dogo,’’
Elizabeth Maina the Sustainability Officer, FKL.
Capacity building on environmental stewardship
A series of capacity buildings were held across the group. IPS, Botanical Extracts (BE), Allpack, and Farmer’s Choice Ltd. (FCL) carried out trainings aligning with the net zero target.
Nushin Ghassmi, Head of Sustainability and communications stated that she facilitated a number of online session on the net zero journey to highlight best practices and some of the initiatives being carried out, to ensure we meet our net zero target by 2030.
‘‘We had trainings throughout the month on BSF farming, as a mode of managing organic waste sustainably and generating insect protein and frass. We continued with waste management awareness, targeting our employees and their dependents in the villages within Rosemark as part of the campaign,’’
Joseph Rotich, Sustainability Champion Rosemark Division, FCL
Recycle, Reduce
BE carried out a mass clean-up at the EPZ zonal premises. This activity was carried out from 15-17th February 2023. Sustainability champions from BE dedicated a total of 18 hours to this activity.
‘‘Premier Foods Limited (PFL) has eradicated the use of plastic cups in the factory cafeteria for staff, they have recently introduced the use of sustainable caps, aligning to the ongoing waste management campaign at the company,’’
Fidel Mwaniki, Environmental and Social Officer PFL
The #Loveourplanet campaign is amongst the many campaigns ongoing at the companies, to ensure we achieve our water, waste, energy, tree growing and our overall net zero target.
